Winter Onion "Augusta".
The earliest harvest of vitamin-rich greens and strong bulbs!
An early variety of short-day winter onion, specially designed for sowing in autumn and overwintering in open ground. It forms uniform flat-round bulbs weighing 109-114 g.
The outer scales are a beautiful golden colour, fitting tightly to the bulb, ensuring good preservation. The variety possesses excellent resistance to bolting and high frost resistance, which is critical for our climate.
Suitable for obtaining the earliest bunching produce (green onions) in spring and fully formed bulbs in summer. Sowing is carried out strictly in the second half of August or in early September.
Cultivation.
Bulb onions prefer fertile, light loams or loamy chernozems with a neutral reaction (does not tolerate acidic soils!).
The best predecessors: cucumber, cabbage, tomato, potatoes, legumes.
When growing onion sets (sevok): seeds are sown in autumn or early spring (as soon as the soil allows) on ridges, across which grooves are made (every 10-15 cm). Seeds are sown every 1-1.5 cm, to a depth of 1.5-2.0 cm.
When growing market bulbs: the width between rows should be 20-30 cm. After sowing, the soil is slightly compacted. With autumn sowing, the rows must be mulched with humus or peat to protect against freezing.
Sets are harvested as soon as the leaves begin to turn yellow and lodge. At the phase of 2-3 true leaves, the crops are thinned out, leaving a distance of 3-4 cm between plants. Feeding is carried out if necessary.
